Mission Accomplished

Four Winds Family Festival Weekend 2008 Was A Smashing Success.

Almost all of the 30 families showed up at the Best Western Midway Hotel on Friday evening in time to pick up their rental packages.  Most of the 8th grade BRAT PACK that contracted the GP FLU on Friday morning and had to miss the rest of the day of school, made a miraculous recovery and spent the evening skiing and snowboarding with all the new Christmas gear.  Afterwards there was quite the pool party with all the new members on the trip.  The wine and cheese greeting party lasted well after our hotel management would have liked.  Miraculously there were no complaints.  Maybe that’s because Four Winds Ski Club had all the poolside rooms on both floors.  It was really great to see a bunch of familiar faces around the pool and fun to meet all the new families.  Some even joined in some of the legendary BAM Sessions.  I hear several of the foosball players had to retire after all the yellow and red cards were handed out in bar later on that night.

Saturday started with continental breakfast in our pajamas.  We were greeted to a couple of inches of nice light powdery snow.  We had 12 first timers show up for Club Skiing Lessons on the Bunny Hill and most of them graduated to the ski lift before the end of the weekend.  We also had a quite a bunch of first time snowboarders that made strides towards the Dark Side.  Thanks to all the members that helped with the lessons.  It really says a lot about our club to have members give up their ski time to help out with new members.  All those lessons sure made the Beer & Brat taste all that much better.   Wait till you see the GROUP PHOTO that we took on the sun deck in front of the Sundance Chalet.  Of the One Hundred and Twenty members that we had come on the trip we filled the entire patio deck for the picture holding up the new club banner.  Several member families were not able to attend the photo section due to unexpected visits to the X-Ray Photo Department with the Wausau Memorial Hospital.  One family making their second ambulance run it two years.  Most of the Fourwinder’s that have been around for a while have had some light hearted fun with, “WHERE’S BOB WESTRICH”.  This year we were introduced to a new, slightly more serious game “WHERE THE HECK ARE YOU LANCE”.   If the members don’t find him in time and show him the how to operate the walkie talkie, then Ski Patrol will be summoned to assist in his safe return.  Several members wandered into Da Bears Den and discovered why the slopes were so empty that afternoon. They found a pretty rowdy crowd of Cheddar Heads cheering on their beloved Green Bay Packers instead of enjoying the wonderful snow storm that was dumping a nice amount of snow right on the hill.  Some of us enjoyed the horse drawn sleigh rides and there is a bon fire and a spectacular fireworks display on the hill in front of the lodge. Some members watched from the top of the hill and saw an unbelievable site looking down on onto the fireworks with the city of Wausau as the backdrop.  Fireworks are really starting to become a theme for Dave Shelton run events.  Most of us skied until your little hearts content or until the old body said enough is enough.    Kids hopped in the pool and Parents hobbled over to the hot tub and rested their tired parts.  A little more subdued than Friday Night.

Sunday we woke up to another couple of inches of fresh snow to put a beautiful touch on the mountain at Granite Peak.  The trees were all covered with snow and the skiing was much better.  Since we didn’t have to rush back to catch the Bears game this year, we got to spend a lot more time on the slopes on Sunday.  Most of us didn’t leave until 3:00 or 4:00pm.  The drive back to Sweet Home Chicago wasn’t near the challenge it has been in the past couple years.   Hope you all had a great time and look forward to seeing you all back next year.
